DIY Wafer-thin keyboard

August14

After taking an ancient Microsoft Internet Keyboard apart, turns out its a rather simple mod to convert it to a wafer-thin, touch sensitive, transparent beast. The basics and a link to a Flikr site with more info. How sweet is this?!?! More (offsite link)…

Safety

August12

I will never ask for it shows weakness,
no expectations is the key.
I must keep my own bounderies
resignation is all that’s left for me.

Hide my hurt and comfort yours
I care too much to see you in pain.
Kiss your wounds then send you home
Knowing we will meet again.

Thank you for the times we share
It means more than you will know.
Time to step back from the line
Never let any feelings show.

grep, awk, head and tail — Oh, My! Linux data extraction text utilities

August12

Much of Linux® system administration involves tediously combing through plain-text configuration files. Fortunately, Linux has a rich array of UNIX®-derived data extraction utilities, including head, tail, grep, egrep, fgrep, cut, paste, join, awk, and more. This article uses real-world examples that show how these simple command-line programs can make you a better sysadmin. This article looks at each data extraction utility and its options, applies them to typical files that are used in day-to-day work, and looks at how and why each tool is useful for pulling data from these files. Perspective: Microsoft security–no more second chances?

August12

By Charles Cooper, CNET News Perspective

As if Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff didn’t have enough on his plate. Not only has he had to deal with Katrina and Osama. Now he’s also got to whip Steve Ballmer and the crew at Microsoft into shape. If past is prologue, that last task may be the most daunting of all. In a remarkable declaration earlier this week, the Department of Homeland Security–a bureaucracy set up to deal with stuff that generally falls under the category of national emergency–called on all users of Windows software to install a new security patch issued by Microsoft. This wasn’t your garden variety flaw. The fear in Washington was a repeat of something like the chaos caused by the MSBlast worm in 2003. More (offsite link)…

Network Device Configuration Management

August11

by Anshuman Kanwar, Sys Admin Magazine

Your most elaborate disaster recovery plans are only as good as your backups. In the context of routers (and most firewalls), all configuration is normally stored as a plain-text file in flash memory or some sort of NVRAM. Creating a replica of a router in case of catastrophic failure is simply a matter of physically plugging in a cold standby and copying the configuration from some backup medium onto the new device.

Rancid (Really Awesome New CIsco config Differ) is a tool that automates the process of backing up device configuration. In this article, I will discuss how to install and maintain rancid and also explore the benefits that result from having a working, up-to-date rancid repository. More (offsite link)…

Ex-husbands suck

August11

That says it all. I hear men complain all the time about ex-wives taking everything in the divorce. What you don’t hear about are the deadbeat ex-husbands that take it all. I was divorced from my ex-husband five years ago. He got my house, he got the furniture, he kept the kids baby pictures, he kept their toys, the appliances, the bank accounts. He ran up the credit cards that were in my name. What did I get? I got my beautiful children, thank goodness, and all the debt. I am still going through the courts as I get sued for debts he was ordered to pay but never did. I didn’t even get child support. Read the rest of this entry »
