Same here. DNS records nixxed, cant access my business email, all clients sites down, and their 'DNS Configuration Tool' is completely broken. As much as I hate the idea of moving all my sites, it's got to be done. Damn you VPSLink, you used to be cool!

I unfortunately dove into Linux without any guidance and Ubuntu was the distro I fell upon. I tried one called Ultimate Edition, but there wasn't much support and I didn't know at the time what anything was called, much less what GUI Enviroment it was running and that there were differences in them. I'm still a little Linux challenged, but since starting and running my own Apache 2 web server, which I had used to publicly host about 6 websites for a few months, I've learned a vast amount more about it.

Jaunty has been a big improvement on my end, which now offers wireless drivers for my Asus Eee netbook. I've seen many issues with it, but I have nothing but Windows to compare it to and there's just no comparison. I wouldn't touch Windows anymore except I do a lot of video editing and I haven't successfully managed to do that in Ubuntu without video rendering issues. So I'm still partially married to Windows.

In terms of support, I've actually had good luck so far and really haven't needed forum support since you can find an answer that works just about every time with the use of Google.

I did appreciate your review though and if I get the chance, I might give another distro a try. I looked a Fedora and I still favored Ubuntu, but that's as far as I've gone.

That is the beginnings of a handmade spinning wheel. I am going to make my own yarn yo! Recycled materials including reclaimed wood from a pallet, the bicycle wheel, and all kinds of odds and ends. My grandad is helping me - yay for his knowledge and experience - and we are currently in stage two of our prototype. We are just going by pictures - we are too awesome for plans!

You are quick with the reply - am I on your speed dial? ;)

There is a ton I left out of this post and I just had to stop. I started it Sunday morning and couldn't go to sleep until I at least finished it. This is not my typical posting topic but gee, it's another one of those things that drive me nuts.

My brain went in so many directions - including the China sweatshops - crummy materials full of lead - consumer protection that kills future home based business - I mean really, it could so easily be a book but my final thoughts led me back to my latest fit of the dumbing down of America so that might just be my next post should I get my facts checked.

Thanks for reading and offering your thoughts. I always appreciate and value them!

Great post although I must admit I did an immediate find for the "C" word, nope didn't find it.

CHINA, lets face it most if not all big box stores are nothing more than a pipeline of Chinese made products sold to us. What does that mean? Cheap borderline slave labor sub standard products for us to purchase at an "affordable" price.

On the flip side this poses a dilemma for gifted designers who want to sell products to as many people as possible. For them they need to think about creating mass produced items in a cradle to cradle way, is that even possible in the big box business model?

Again thanks for the great post, that is all.

This is part of why I stick to writing. I don't have time to LISTEN to podcasts much less produce one, but I've been doing technical writing on everything from car repair to electronics, programming to information security, and beyond.

We recorded one episode about a year ago. It ended up being botched due to feedback. Now, every time my buddies and I think about podcasting, it sounds cool for about 10 minutes. Then we realize how much more work it is. The work that it takes to record it, produce it, edit it, and upload it eats into the time that any of us could be spending on researching and writing. That doesn't even start to touch on the fact that our schedules would have to all work out in order to record it together, even via skype.

I miss the info from Alternageek, but the truth is I couldn't listen as often as I wish i could have. A daily or 3x weekly written brain dump seems so much more efficient to me.

Best of luck in whatever you choose!

I had something meaningful and thought provoking written out before but I lost it, so I'll try to keep it simple.

I stopped my show for many of the same reasons you stopped yours and I too feel like I need to teach and help those that would benefit from my knowledge. I could forget it and move on, but I'd never shake the urge to try again, and I don't know if I want to live with that "what if" hanging over my head. That's my opinion however. You have your own and your own life to live. My advice is to follow your heart. If you can stop and not look back--then don't. But if you find yourself wondering "what if", then give it another shot. There aren't many successful podcasters outside of the mainstream techtv crowd, but we can be just as tight of a community if we try. So if you start your show back up, I'll do what I can to support it, and if your format permits, contribute as well. When everyone supports each other it can only make the KC podcasting community better.

Hey, I totally understand. I'm thinking about resurrecting my show as well for much the same reason, but I too have some of the same challenges. I've been waiting for the right time to jump back into things, but it just never seems like things fit together just right. Between working in a data center 45 + hours a week, attending school part time, and dealing with 6 pets, 1 child, and a home to help take care of, it seems impossible to consider, but after three back injuries, two knee injuries, one ankle, and a serious case of tendinitis in my elbow from the work I do now, I realize I work at the low-end of high-tech and I've got to do what ever I can to improve my life and still see to my own happiness too. There are people out there that need our help and I feel I've accomplished more by helping one person than I do building out an entire network of servers.
